ACKNOWLEDGING LAND, WATERS, AND PEOPLE

In the Dakota language, Mnisóta is the land where waters reflect the skies. The state of Minnesota shares geography with 11 recognized sovereign Tribal Nations.

Backyard Phenology is affiliated with The University of Minnesota, which is located on Dakota Treaty Land: 1805, 1837, 1851. As a land grant institution, the university was created through coercion, theft, and forced displacement of Dakota, Ojibwe, Ho-Chunk, and Cheyenne peoples.

As we pay attention to the world around us, we acknowledge that this place is the past, contemporary, and future land of the Dakota People, the Dakota Oyáte. We are grateful to the Dakota People, as well as to Ojibwe, Ho-Chunk, and other Indigenous Peoples, for their care of the land and waters. As we expand our attention to include more-than-human beings, we seek to understand and uphold our responsibilities within the web of all relations.
